Franklin Cartoon

Stanley Franklin the celebrated political cartoonist, was a member at Pinner for a few years in the early 1970's. Here is a topical cartoon he presented to the Club.

Featuring the young Prince Charles with the Duke of Edinburgh leading a parade of famous cricketers and Dennis Healey (Lab Defence Secretary )

We think this cartoon refers to a Benefit Day held at Pinner Hill for the Middlesex cricketers Len Muncer and Harry Sharpe back in 1971. This ties in nicely with Ted Heath's "at a stroke" quote in 1970 ( "This would, at a stroke, reduce the rise in prices, increase production and reduce unemployment" - on Tory proposals to reduce taxation):  The Harold Wilson / David Dimbleby BBC interview of 1971 (Yesterdays Men ) appears to be the reference to the books in the wheel-barrow (story as sold to the Sunday Times in 1971)

We also see the politically incorrect Alf Garnet together with Enoch Powell ( "Rivers of Blood" ) and caddy! (but note they are heading for a ravine!)
